Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc recently approved a project aiming to turn Vietnam into a nation with developed sports on the continent by 2035.

The project aims to foster the discovery, selection and training of sport talents and experts competing in Vietnam’s key sports at regional, continental and international events, such as Olympic Games.

Within the framework of the project, the country will enhance training conditions for 3,700 athletes of national teams, including 400 athletes winning international titles. Vietnam also works to train about 600 sport coaches in the period.

Meanwhile, track and field, swimming, weightlifting, taekwondo, shooting, archery and wrestling have been chosen as Vietnam’s key sports in international events.

In 2019, the sports sector will work to improve results in key sports towards high achievements at the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 30) and the 10th ASEAN Para Games in the Philippines, the first World Beach Games in the US, the qualifying rounds for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and other events.

Regarding international cooperation, the sector will focus on the implementation of agreements signed and enhance ties with other ASEAN nations and sporting powerhouses like China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US.
